ASIAN
MOVIE ARCHAEOLOGIST (AMA) is a new half-hour
cultural TV program in Putonghua, Cantonese,
and English, devoted to Asian cinema in
general and Hong Kong/Chinese movies in
particular. Our purpose is to fill the void
that now exists on television when it comes
to movie-related programs: they're either
star gossip, PR promotion, or a combination
of both. Not that there's anything wrong
with those kinds of programs, but film buffs
also hunger for something that delves beneath
the surface yet still remains entertaining.
AMA hopes to fill that void by exploring
topics ranging from in-depth interviews
with today's stars, to offbeat subjects
in cinematic lore dating back to the birth
of Asia's motion picture industry.
A unique aspect of AMA's behind-the-scenes
team is the cooperation of film and media
students from universities in such countries
and regions as Hong Kong, China, Malaysia,
Singapore, and Taiwan. Not only will AMA
provide them with an opportunity to participate
in media production and greater exposure
to the movie world, but they in turn will
help give AMA a young perspective even as
the program explores nostalgic topics from
Asian cinema's earliest days.
